Rackspace announces new off-planet cloud storage service

Rackspace, the well-known hosting company from Dallas, Texas, announced today that it will soon extend its portfolio of hosting services with a new, ground-breaking cloud storage service, Off-Planet Backup.

Rackspace, the well-known hosting company from Dallas, Texas, announced today that it will soon extend its portfolio of hosting services with a new, ground-breaking cloud storage service, Off-Planet Backup.

The new service will be delivered from Rackspace’s new 40.000 sq. ft. datacenter in Mare Ibrium on the Moon. It took the company over 2 years to ship all required materials and personnel to the site. The project faced a big setback in 2010, when a Rackspace spaceship with 200 servers was robbed by Somalian space pirates.

The new datacenter features a fast 10 TBit connection to Earth and nearby space stations, and will bring peace of mind to customers who require off-planet storage. In seconds, all data is safely stored on the new Lunar Storage Arrays, which can carry up to 15,000 PB.  The datacenter’s security is second to none; it can withstand meteor showers, gamma radiation and solar flares. Additionally, the AI system that operates the datacenter’s robotic crew has been updated with the latest anti-mutiny technology.

The announcement was overshadowed however by the lawsuit filed by family members of a group of visitors that went to see the new datacenter on the moon in 2010 and never returned on Earth.
